Welcome to all new and returning students to NTSU Conservation Society!  

Who are ConSoc?
Simply put, ConSoc is all about wildlife. Our aim as a society is to provide students with the opportunity to get involved with environmentally friendly and conservation-focused activities both on campus and further afield (including lots of adventures to some amazing wildlife hotspots!). We also hold social events such as wildlife quizzes and casual walks to see wildlife.

We have been running for over 17 years now and won the Society of the Year Award for 2016, 2017 and event of the year award 2018.

We welcome and encourage students from a diverse range of NTU courses who share our interest in wildlife and conservation.  As we know, this can take many forms, whether it be observing creatures (big and small!), photographing wildlife in their natural habitats, or volunteering to manage such habitats to help the species living there. So if you would love to get outside to both appreciete and help conserve some wildlife, and to make some friends, come and give ConSoc a go!

At ConSoc we provide you with opportunities to take part in a range of conservation-based activities, including surveys, wildlife-watching and habitat management. Some will offer a chance to enhance your ID skills, others may offer the chance to improve or enhance your practical skill set, gain knowledge and experience through the use of hand tools and other equipment which we provide.

This will also give you an opportunity to put the theory learned in lectures into practice, which in turn will enhance your CV, along with your personal and professional development. Over time this will give you an edge over your competitors when the time arrived for you to find employment or volunteer placements within the conservation/environment sector. In fact, many of our previous members have stated that being an active members of ConSoc did in fact help them to find work in their desired field!

These sessions can take place on the Brackenhurst Estate or offsite, often on projects with leading national conservation organisations such as the Wildlife Trusts and the RSPB. Previous projects have included volunteering with the local Biodiversity Action Group, run by Nottingham County Council and working closely with their Biodiversity Officer assisting in the Grizzled Skipper butterfly project, which previously scooped the NTSU award for best Society Activity, and a project to eradicate Signal Crayfish from a city pond.

When can you get Involved?
Every month we put out a poster with that months events. This poster will be showcased in our society board in the top floor of Bramley building as well as being emailed out to all current society members (this will show up in your uni email account inbox). Events start in September and run into mid May/early June. We send each society member a google form to fill out in this monthly email so they can register their interest in the events. Our social media is also a great place to look to see what we get up to as a society.

Throughout the year we offer many trips out to places of conservation interest, both locally and nationally. These trips have proven to be very popular with our members. Previous trips included going to the Peak District to see stag rutting and search for the mountain hare, Rufford Abbey to spot hawfinches, Bempton cliffs to see the seabirds, as well as many more local and on-campus events. 

Our biggest event is our end of year Scotland trip for our members with the highest attendance. This trip is roughly a week long and packed with adventures around Scotland, a big hit every year!
