Training

We offer online training where you will learn about all things societies at NTSU.

As a leader of your society, you are required to complete online training in order to fulfil your role on the committee.

This training will inform you about all relevant processes and procedures, and give you helpful tips on how to make the most out of your time as a society leader. There two options for the training course, depending on whether you are a new or returning committee member. You only need to complete one.

If you have not used this training platform before, you will need to create a new account using your N number university email e.g. N1234567@ntu.ac.uk. You will receive an email to confirm your account, which may go to your Junk folder. If you have used the platform before, you do not need to create a new account.

Please note that the training portal may sometimes experience errors, which mean your progress will show as 80% , instead of 100% completed. Please do not be alarmed by this.

In-person training

As well as the online training portal, we have organised in-person training sessions, both in the form of a Society Conference Day and smaller pick up sessions. They give you an opportunity to get focused, hands-on training on specific topics, and have your questions answered.

These in-person training sessions have been developed to inform our society committees on critical processes and procedures, we have sessions based arouund Consent, Finance & Funding, Conflict Management, Event Planning, Engaging Society Members. We are keen to offer the right guidance on how to get the most out of your society, so if there is anything you think we are missing, let us know! We aim to deliver two conference style training days for your committee, in May when you first take your roles and then in the second term for any new members or anyone who missed the first chance.

If you feel you need some extra support in a particular area, do not worry - that's what we are here for! Feel free to contact an opportunities coordinator for more 1-1 support.

To complement your online training, we have created a series of guides to help you with the day-to-day running of your society. These cover everything from committee roles to running trips and events.

President: As the leader of your committee and society, you have the job of making sure all aspects of your group run smoothly. This guide covers your responsibilities.

Vice President: Previously, societies were required to have a Treasurer role. We now ask instead that it is a Vice President who accompanies your President, and that they take charge of the society's finance. This is an important role, and this guide will cover the key funding responsibilities which Vice Presidents will now be responsible for:

Secretary: Keeping a record of everything that happens in the society might seem a big task, so this guide will cover your key responsibilities:

Committee Member: On larger committees, it’s important to ensure that everyone pitches in. This guide covers the key responsibilities and qualities of a committee member:

Annual General Meetings: When elections take place in Term 2, every society is required to run an AGM to discuss the year, present a financial report and vote on any changes to the Constitution. We have created a guide to explain how an AGM works, as well as the best way to run it online.

Development Plan: Each society should complete a Development Plan over the summer, ready for Term One. This document allows you to plan and review your activities, ready to pass on to future committees. We have created guidance on how to complete this, as well an example of a completed plan:

Event Planning 101: Don’t know where to start when planning a society event? This guide covers the process from start to finish, allowing you to plan, promote, and execute your activity:

External Speakers: External Speakers are key if you wish to offer something to your students that will benefit them outside of their studies. This guide covers the key requirements and considerations for bringing an external speaker onto campus or for online activities.

Trips: Any event outside of Nottingham is defined as a trip, therefore you need to take extra measures to ensure everyone is safe and enjoys themselves. This guide covers everything that goes into running a trip:

Boat Balls: While it’s not quite the French Riviera, the River Trent is a popular location for an end-of-year Boat Ball. If you’re looking to run one with your society, check out this guide first:

Finance and Funding Guidance: To a beginner, society finances can be complicated. This guide contains all the information you need to know about your society accounts and your funding sources:

Online Event Ideas: We have compiled over 100 ideas for online activities. These will give you some inspiration to keep engaged with your members while we’re not on campus as much as usual:

Group Chats and Discussions: Keeping in close contact with your society members is crucial for updating them on upcoming events, discussing opportunities, or just chatting about last night’s Bake Off. We’ve come up with a list of some of the best:

Online Conduct: It’s important to make sure that anything you run online linked to the society provides a good impression of the group. This guide will show how you to present yourself in a positive light and how to respond to inappropriate behaviour:

Streaming Content: Online streaming is a big industry now, from gaming to webinars. This how-to guide covers the basics of streaming to get your society engaging students in new ways:

Social Media: Promoting your society and its activities is important if you want to grow your membership. Here’s how you can use social media to do that:
