Motion for NTSU to take a Humanitarian Stance in relation to the Gaza Crisis

Here is all the essential information about the upcoming referendum for NTSU to take a humanitarian stance on Gaza Crisis.

What is the Referendum?

A referendum allows every student to participate in a vote. Students will be asked to respond with either 'yes' or 'no' to the following question: "Should NTSU adopt the following policy: 'Motion for NTSU to take a humanitarian stance in relation to the Gaza crisis'?"  The complete text of the motion is provided below, and we strongly recommend reading it thoroughly to ensure you can cast an informed vote.

You can choose to vote 'YES' for NTSU to adopt the policy, or 'NO' for NTSU not to adopt the policy. For the referendum to be valid, at least 300 students must vote. The outcome will be decided by a simple majority. If more students vote 'YES', NTSU will adopt the policy as outlined. If 'NO' votes are in the majority, NTSU will not formally adopt the policy, however it will not prevent work from taking place in this area.

Here are some key dates....

NTSU's Democractic Procedures Document dictates that a referendum must be completed within 14 days after it has been called. Below is a set of key dates in which this referendum will be completed:

28th May (5pm): Petition for referendum closes and referendum is triggered

5th June (6.30pm): Referendum voting opens and campaigning begins

11th June (6.30pm): Referendum voting closes

11th June (7.30pm): Complaints deadline

13th June (5.30pm): Deadline for referendum outcome to be published on NTSU websiteClick here to Vote

Why are we having a referendum?

According to NTSU's Memorandum and Articles of Association, (NTSU's primary governing document) a referendum may be called by a secure petition signed by at least 200 members. Following a request for a petition, students were able to add their signature from 4pm on Monday 20th May, until 5pm on Tuesday 28th May. At the time of closing, the petition had reached 240 signatures, thereby triggering a referendum.

What is NTSU's position?

NTSU is committed to ensuring a free and fair debate based on factual information, allowing every NTU student the opportunity to participate. Student members, including elected officers, are welcome to engage in the dicussion, but they do not represent the official NTSU stance on the policy. The referendum has been initiated by student members, who are expressing their own individual views.

Campaigning, Rules & Regulations

To ensure the process remains fair, there are rules and regulations that must be followed by all students participating in the referendum. Please make sure you familiarise yourself with these guidelines.
