This trial is the latest stage in our plan to phase out single-use plastics from our venues. It follows our previous implementation of sustainable food packaging and paper drinking straws in our other venues.
We'll initially roll out the scheme at Brackenhurst evening events like Fluid, where our branded cups will be collected, washed, and reused rather than thrown away at night's end.
We expect the environmental impact to be significant. Brack students typically go through 10,000 drinks at Brack Bar annually, which equates to 193 disposable plastic cups a week.
The new plastic cups supplied by Green Goblet are a highly sustainable alternative to single-use cups. While manufacturing them requires twice the CO2 of a single-use plastic cup, they can be used up to 75 times, drastically reducing carbon emissions across their lifecycle.
After factoring in washing the cups between uses, their CO2 breakeven point is three uses. This compares favourably with another popular alternative—single-use paper cups—with a breakeven point of fourteen uses.
Once the new cups reach the end of their life, they will be downcycled at local recycling centres.
NTSU is continually working towards operating greener venues and reducing our carbon footprint. If this trial succeeds, we plan to take similar measures wherever single-use plastics are still in use.
