Charity Varsity Series: Charities Benefitted
Obviously, the Varsity series is a great occasion both for players and fans, but it must not be forgotten that the whole event is for a chosen charity. Each year, a specific charity is chosen by both Universities, in which all proceeds from the series will be donated to. In past years, the charities have been the Tsunami Appeal, the Danielle Beccan Memorial Fund, Cerebral Palsy Sport, and the Nottinghamshire Royal Society for the Blind.
The Official Varsity Series Charity for 2010 was 'CRY.'
CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) is a charity that is instrumental in the diagnosis and prevention of Sudden Cardiac Death in young people.
CRY was chosen as the charity for 2010 in memory of Neil Desai, a talented sportsman and first class Law student from the University of Nottingham, who died suddenly on 5th September 2008 - his 22nd birthday - from an undiagnosed heart condition.
The money raised from ticket sales for Varsity 2010 matches went directly back into both Nottingham Trent University and Nottingham University through screenings for students in an attempt to raise awareness of conditions that could lead to Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD) and Sudden Death Syndrome (SDS)
In 2005 nearly £4000 was raised.
